Nambucca Shire Council will now be formally known as Nambucca Valley Council following its approval by the Minister for Local Government, the Hon Shelley Hancock MP and the Governor of NSW, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC.
Mayor, Councillor Rhonda Hoban OAM, said that following representations from community members to change the name of Council to Nambucca Valley Council so that it would be more representative of its diverse communities, Council agreed to obtain the views of the wider community.
“A community survey of over 400 community members was conducted in July 2019 by an independent survey company, Jetty Research. The results of the survey indicated that 64% of respondents supported the name change.
“Statistically speaking the survey could have been conducted another twenty times with 19 of those surveys only varying by plus or minus 5% from this survey, meaning that the majority of people in the Council area support the name change.
“Council believes the name change will encourage a unified community under one broader representative Council name and provide a greater awareness of the Nambucca Valley hinterland and its towns and attractions which will encourage increased visitation and assist in boosting those local economies.
“As our current logo already includes “Nambucca Valley” it is unlikely that community members will notice too many changes and it will be business as usual for Council” concluded Councillor Hoban.
The result of the community survey can be found on the Council website.
