Rural Fire Service (RFS)

Know your risk and be prepared for bush fires. Visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au - Plan and Prepare

Preparation will give you and your family the best possible chance of surviving a bush fire and reduce the impact on your property. Download the “Prepare Your Home” and other fact sheets. The RFS provides up-to-date information on:

• fire incidents in New South Wales
• bush fire danger ratings and total fire bans
• which areas are bush fire prone, including a mapping tool to locate your property
• how to report a fire hazard on your property or another property near you

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) recommends making a Bush Fire Survival Plan download the guide and follow the Four Simple Steps. 

Hazards Near Me app

Hazards Near Me NSW is the official mobile phone app of the NSW RFS, providing information and warnings about bush and grass fires across the state. The app is available at the App Store and Google Play. You can also follow the RFS on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Fire Permits

There is a year-round requirement to give at least 24 hours’ notice to the Lower North Coast Burn Notification Line 02 6626 6860 and all your adjoining neighbours before lighting a fire. You can notify online at: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify.

The Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2010 may also apply. Information and maps for these are available under Council's Control for Burning webpage.

AIDER Program

The AIDER (Assist Infirm, Disabled and Elderly Residents) program is a free, one-off service aimed at reducing bush fire hazards on people’s properties. AIDER is designed for aged residents and residents with disabling conditions who live on bush fire prone land and have limited domestic support available from family, relatives, friends or other services. If you would like to know more about this free one-off service, call 02 8741 4955 or email aider@rfs.nsw.gov.au or download the AIDER fact sheet.

Neighbourhood Safer Places – a Place of Last Resort

A Neighbourhood Safer Place (NSP) is a place of last resort for people during a bush fire.  A Neighbourhood Safer Place is a building or space in the community that can provide a level of protection from the immediate life-threatening effects of a bush fire. Neighbourhood Safer Places can’t be considered completely safe; there is still some risk in moving to them and sheltering in them.  It can be part of your contingency plan, for a time when your Bush Fire Survival Plan cannot be implemented or has failed. The primary purpose of a NSP is the protection of human life.

• When you are travelling to your Neighbourhood Safer Place, there may be heavy smoke and poor visibility. Water, toilets and food may not be available at the Neighbourhood Safer Place and emergency service personnel may not be present.

• The conditions at the Neighbourhood Safer Place may be uncomfortable and  may be affected by heat, smoke and embers. Neighbourhood Safer Places are not intended for pets or livestock.

The Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) has identified the following NSPs for areas within the Nambucca Valley Local Government Area.

It is also recommended that residents living close to a local government boundary check the location of NSPs in the adjoining local government area. Your closest NSP may well be in the adjoining local government area.
