Exempt Development

Some minor building renovations or works don’t need any planning or building approval. This is called exempt development. Exempt development is very low impact development that can be done for certain residential, rural, commercial and industrial properties.

A few examples of development that can be exempt development are decks, garden sheds, carports, fences, repairing a window or painting a house. More information is available in the Understanding exempt development fact sheet (PDF, 266 KB).

As long as the proposed works meet all of the development standards listed in the relevant legislation, approval will not be needed. A list of the relevant legislation and applicable development standards are as follows:

  • Add another tab to the new ‘Do I Need Approval’ drop down titled ‘Find Property Information’ with the following text:

 

The NSW Planning Portal contains a Spatial Viewer which enables you to search for planning information about any property in NSW. The Spatial Viewer is an easy to use mapping system which enables you to easily obtain information about a property such as its zoning, the maximum building height, the minimum lot size and whether it is bushfire prone.
