MEDIA RELEASE - Appointment of Bede Spannagle as New General Manager

Nambucca Valley Council Mayor Rhonda Hoban OAM has announced the appointment of Bede Spannagle as Council’s new General Manager.

Council, at its Meeting on Thursday 30 November 2023, resolved unanimously to appoint Mr Spannagle to the position for a five-year period commencing 15 December 2023.

Mr Spannagle has been Council’s Acting General Manager since September. His appointment follows a competitive recruitment process, undertaken on Council’s behalf by Local Government NSW Management Solutions, which attracted a number of strong applicants. The selection panel were impressed by Mr Spannagle’s extensive leadership experience at senior executive level and strong background in engineering, gained over a local government career spanning almost 30 years.

Initially appointed as Council’s Director Engineering Services in April this year, Mr Spannagle was Director Engineering at Riverina Water County Council for nine years, Project Director Flood Recovery at Tumut Shire Council for two years and Director Technical Services at Upper Hunter Shire Council for ten years.

Mr Spannagle’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from the University of Sydney, Masters of Business Administration from Charles Sturt University and Graduate Certificate of Technology Management from Deakin University.

Council’s Mayor Rhonda Hoban OAM congratulated Mr Spannagle on his appointment. “Council has a large capital works program underway, funded mainly by time-restricted Natural Disaster grants and is experiencing the pressures of significant increases in the price and availability of materials, staff shortages and contractor availability.

Council is confident that Mr Spannagle’s skills and experience will be of great benefit in meeting the ongoing challenges of asset and infrastructure maintenance and renewal and maintaining existing service levels for our community.”
